comparison of foscarnet and ganciclovir. Showed similar efficacy for the
two drugs in controlling retinitis and a survival advantage for foscarnet.

CMV Retinitis Retreatment Trial (CRRT): Test of combination therapy
with foscarnet and ganciclovir for recurrent CMV. Showed that combination
therapy was more effective than monotherapy. Completed 1993.

HPMPC Peripheral CMV Retinitis Trial (HPCRT): Trial of HPMPC
(cidofovir) for newly diagnosed patients. Showed that Cidofovir was
effective for the control of retinitis. Contributed to FDA approval
of cidofovir. Completed 1996.

Monoclonal Antibody CMV Retinitis Trial (MACRT): Trial of adjuvant
therapy with MSL 109. Showed no difference between treatment and placebo
groups. Completed 1996.

Ganciclovir Cidofovir CMV Retinitis Trial (GCCRT): Comparison of
highly active local therapy (ganciclovir implant) versus systemic therapy (IV
regimens) for treatment of newly diagnosed or relapsed CMV retinitis.
Showed no difference between the groups for control of retinitis.
